“They don’t ask for sympathy, just dignity.”
This thought echoed in our hearts as we visited a group of ragpicker women living on the fringes of society, yet playing a silent but critical role in keeping our cities clean.
At Devdoot Foundation, our mission has always been to listen to the unheard, to see the unseen, and to walk with those who have been left behind. Our recent visit to a ragpicker community was not just a project meeting—it was a reality check.
🌿 The Hidden Struggles
Ragpicker women, mostly from marginalized communities, begin their day before sunrise. Armed with a sack and unmatched courage, they sift through garbage for plastic, paper, metal—anything of value.
Yet behind this hard work lies a world of pain:
Health issues due to hazardous waste and lack of protective gear.
Daily harassment by authorities and residents who view them as invisible nuisances.
No fixed income, no recognition, no benefits.
No access to education for their children.
Zero healthcare, sanitation, or ID documents—a life beyond the margins.
💬 What They Shared With Us
As we sat with them on worn-out mats, they opened their hearts—not with complaints, but with simple hopes:
“We just want a safe place to live.”
“We want our children to go to school, not the garbage bins.”
“Give us dignity… not pity.”
Their words were powerful, their spirits stronger.
🌟 Our Commitment
Devdoot Foundation is committed to turning these voices into action. Based on this interaction, we are initiating a 3-step support program:
Health & Hygiene Kits: Providing gloves, masks, and sanitary support.
Education for Children: Enrollment support, tuition classes, and school materials.
Legal Identity & Empowerment: Helping them get Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and access to government schemes.
This is just the beginning.
